Try to do following:
1. If you've paired your Apple TV and Apple Remote, make sure you use the paired remote.
2. If you use the paired remote and the LED status of the Apple TV flashes white, the problem is not the remote. See "If you see a picture but Apple TV does not respond" .
3. If you use a remote non-paired, the status light of the Apple TV flashes orange.
